Scleroderma
Scleroderma is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes the skin to become thick and hard, a buildup of scar tissue, and damage to internal organs such as the heart and blood vessels, lungs, stomach, and kidneys. The effects of scleroderma manifest in a variety of ways for each individual.

Treatment
Although the underlying cause is unknown, promising research is shedding light on the relationship between the immune system and scleroderma. Extensive research is constantly ongoing to find better treatments for scleroderma and, hopefully, someday a cure. Physical and occupational therapy may be useful to maintain joint and skin flexibility. Early referral to therapy should be considered to help prevent the loss of joint motion and function.
